Partnership Stories: L&Q
How L&Q Extends Its Impacts Beyond Homes
Since 1963 L&Q has pursued a clear vision: that everyone deserves a quality home that gives them the chance to live a better life, creating safe neighbourhoods and delivering reliable services. Today, the organisation serves over 250,000 people across Greater London and Greater Manchester, with a strong commitment not just to housing, but to people and communities.
Over 1,600 Laptops Donated Since September 2023
Since September 2023, L&Q has donated more than 1,600 laptops to Community Computers for secure data destruction, reuse, and recycling. Over 40% have successfully been refurbished and given a second life, directly supporting families and individuals through improved digital access. The remainder have been securely processed, with components recovered for reuse or responsibly recycled to the highest environmental standards. Every device has a purpose — whether enabling education and employment or contributing to sustainability by reducing electronic waste and conserving valuable resources.
Sustainability at the Core
L&Q is committed to achieving net zero by reducing its carbon footprint and embedding sustainability into every area of its work. Donating IT equipment is just one of the ways the organisation reduces environmental impact while maximising community benefit.
Why Community Computers?
L&Q first connected with Community Computers through a referral from a former employee from another team, at a time when L&Q was expanding operations into Greater Manchester, close to their base. Their friendly approach, strong social mission, and transparent reporting on community impact made an immediate impression. For L&Q, knowing that their devices directly support local people — whether in education, employment, or everyday life — has been a powerful motivator.
Investing in Communities
Beyond housing, L&Q invests heavily in communities through the L&Q Foundation. The Foundation provides debt and money management advice, employment and skills training, and digital inclusion programmes to help residents get online. By donating end-of-life IT devices, L&Q extends this commitment even further, ensuring their resources continue to create lasting impact long after their use in business operations.
A Partnership for the Future
L&Q refreshes its IT assets regularly in line with Microsoft support lifecycles. Community Computers’ secure IT asset disposal service provides us with a timely and trusted route for decommissioning equipment, ensuring both security and sustainability.
As an L&Q employee, I am proud of my involvement in this initiative and working with such a great partnership. It’s heartwarming to hear the stories of how we are helping to make the lives of others much easier. Tackling digital poverty is becoming ever more necessary as the need for online access becomes ever more important.
